Gibraltar's name stems from the Arabic words jabal Tariq, meaning Tariq's mountain. General Tariq ibn-Ziyad led the initial incursion into Iberia in 711. Earlier it had been known as Mons Calpe, one of the Pillars of Hercules in Latin.
