When the loved ones of your friends or family members pass, it’s an incredibly difficult time for everyone and using the correct phrases or expressing how you feel can be key for someone through the grieving process.
If you’re still learning Spanish, it can be a very awkward situation to be in, scared to say anything at all in case you put your foot in it and say something wrong.
Here are some simple phrases that you can learn and say, which may be of great comfort to someone.
Lo siento or lo siento mucho – This translates as “I’m sorry” or “I’m really sorry” and is one of the most common ways to express condolences, just like it is in English too. It's also fairly easy to remember and to say.
To use it in a sentence you could say "Siento mucho tu/su pérdida" – "I’m sorry for your loss" or "Siento mucho lo de tu/su abuelo" – "I’m very sorry for your grandfather", for example.
Mis más sentidas condolencias – This roughly translates as "My deepest condolences". It’s typically used at funerals or perhaps in cards you send to the family.
Mi más sentido pésame – This phrase is very similar to the above and can also be translated as “My deepest condolences”.

Lo lamento mucho – As you may have guessed this is similar to the word lament in English. Like the phrase lo siento, you could say “Lamento mucho tu/su pérdida” which could also mean “I’m really sorry for your loss”.
The next set of Spanish phrases are longer and a bit more complicated, but provide a way for you to express more.
No me atrevo a decir que entiendo tu dolor, pero estoy aquí – This translates something similar to “I can't begin to understand your pain, but I’m here for you”.
Obviously if you have had a similar experience and you can understand what the person is going through it may be helpful to let them know that you know how difficult it is.
Siempre es triste perder a un ser querido. Te acompaño en el sentimiento. – This means “It’s always sad to lose a loved one. I share your feelings”.
Along a similar vein, you could say Te acompaño en este momento de dolor – This is similar to “I’m with you in this moment of grief”, and is normally used when sending condolences for the loss of a relative.
There are also other phrases you can say to show that you’re there for the person and show your support instead of only sharing your condolences.
These could be used for friends or other people you are close with.
Estaré aquí si necesitas mi apoyo – “I am here if you need my support”.
Si puedo hacer algo para ayudarte a sobrellevarlo, no olvides que estoy aquí – “If there's anything I can do to help you cope, don't forget I'm here”.
Ante esta dura pérdida, cuenta conmigo – “In the face of this difficult loss, you can count on me”.
Me entristece saber de tu pérdida, estaré contigo para lo que necesites – “I'm saddened to hear of your loss. I'll be there for you in any way you need”.
