Visitors to Spain from non-EU countries are subject to the 90-day rule, which states that they can only stay for 90 days out of 180. But how strictly is this rule enforced - and what happens if you end up overstaying?

Are there any other USA citizens having trouble getting a long-stay visa to stay in Spain 4+ months? We have been trying to apply for a long-stay visa through our local (USA) Spanish consulate. For months we have been calling, emailing, writing, everything and get no response. Help!
