Thanks for this article- really interesting and informative. One book I would add to the list is Leaving the Atocha Station by the novelist and poet Ben Lerner - about the experience of a troubled young American coming to Madrid for a poetry fellowship- and not wanting to behave like his compatriots. Very moving, very funny and one of the best things I have ever read about what it is like to try to 'live' in another language.

Surprised not to see South From Granada (Gerald Brenan) amongst your choices, but maybe everyone has already read that. I would recommend the novel Homeland by Fernando Aramburu, a dark but insightful tale abut Basque nationalism at the time of ETA, and how it divided communities, families and friends. I'd definitely recommend The Spanish Holocaust by Prof. Paul Preston. It's outstanding, and achieves the impossible for a documentary by making you want to weep on every other page.
