One of the 28 Easter parades held in Spain's Alicante province last week took an unexpected turn when a statue of the Virgen de los Dolores toppled from her float and almost landed on the heads of her bearers.

Spanish daily El Mundo reported that the precarious parade took place on Maundy Thursday at the high point of the celebrations in the municipality of San Vicente del Raspeig.

The statue bearers rocked a little over-enthusiastically in their fervour, causing the Virgin to take an undignified tumble from her perch.

After a quick inspection, the statue was quickly repositioned on the float, to the applause of the onlooking crowd.

She escaped with only a lightly-damaged crown to show for her misadventure.
