SLEEPING NEAR THE TOP OF A VOLCANO: No visit to Tenerife would be complete without visiting El Teide, Spain's highest peak at 3,718 metres (12,198 feet) and a majestic natural wonder with Mars-like surroundings. El Teide's last eruption obliterated the old capital of Garachico and its people in 1706 but now it’s perfectly safe to sleep upon this dormant volcano. There's a basic refugio, or refuge, just a few hundred metres from El Teide’s summit. Gaze at the star-studded sky at night, wake up early before the sun rises and witness how the other Canary Islands appear on the horizon. Absolutely breathtaking.
