THE KING'S ABDICATION: In one of the most dramatic beginnings to a week in recent years, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called an emergency press conference at around 10am one Monday in June. Within a couple of hours, the country had learned that Spain's King Juan Carlos was to step down. It marked the end of an era as this was the man who led the country from dictatorship to democracy. In a whirlwind transition, less than three weeks later, Spain had a new king and queen in Felipe and Letizia.
