Castilla-La Mancha town sees temperatures below 10C during ongoing heatwave
While most of Spain is sweltering in 30C to 40C heat or more, the town of Salvacañete in the central region of Castilla-La Mancha has experienced chilly temperatures of below 10C in the early hours of the mornings.
On Monday June 22nd it registered 9.6C at 7am, which is in direct contrast to the warm minimum temperatures being recorded across most of the rest of the country.
This is helped by the fact that it sits at an altitude of 1,200 metres.
Spain sees drop in cruise ship passengers following hantavirus scare
Data from Spain's State Ports has revealed a decline in cruise passenger arrivals with just over 1.22 million passengers in May - down five percent, following the 18.2 percent drop recorded in April.
This now means two consecutive months of dwindling passenger numbers which coincides with the recent hantavirus incident last month when a Dutch cruise ship was forced to dock in the Canary Islands due to infections and deaths onboard. There were also a few norovirus outbreaks on British cruise ships.
Between April and May, Spanish ports received approximately 2.45 million cruise passengers, compared to around 2.79 million during the same months in 2015, representing a drop of around 12 percent over the past decade.
Police arrest six town hall officials in a money laundering investigation
Six people have been arrested, four in the province of Soria and two in the region of Madrid, after searches were carried out at Soria Town Hall and two other private residences linked to a recent money laundering investigation, according to government sources.
The investigation is looking into the alleged crimes of influence peddling, unlawful act by public officials, negotiations and activities prohibited to public officials, document forgery, money laundering and organised crime.
The Socialist-governed Soria City Council issued a statement in response to the arrests saying it is "providing full cooperation to the judicial authorities and the agents in charge of the proceedings, facilitating all documentation and information required within the framework of these actions".
Mercadona to open on Sundays over summer in Spain's tourist areas
Mercadona, one of Spain's most popular supermarkets announced that it will now be open on Sundays in tourist areas during the peak summer months, as well closing later on weekdays.
The supermarket has confirmed it will introduce special summer opening hours from 22nd June until August 30th.
The peak tourist months lead to a surge in commercial activity in July and August, forcing many businesses to adapt their services to meet higher demand. Other supermarkets such as Lidl already open on Sundays in towns popular with holidaymakers.
