Teachers pledge nationwide strike across Spain in September
Spanish teachers are organising a nationwide strike across Spain in September to coincide with the start of the new school year.
With industrial action ongoing in Valencia, Spanish media reports suggest the final straw for a national walkout was footage police officer shoving a retired teacher in the back as she was demonstrating in support of state schools in Valencia on Sunday.
Unions have also cited an increased bureaucratic burden, a lack of resources to support pupils with learning needs, an excess of temporary staff, a loss of purchasing power due to inflation, and a ‘paralysis’ within the Ministry of Education practically since the start of the parliamentary term.
Labour Ministry recommends working from home in places visited by Pope Leo XIV
Spain's Ministry of Labour has recommended that companies allow their employees to work from home during Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Spain.
The Pope will visit Madrid, the Canary Islands and Catalonia, where some large-scale events are planned, and the visit is expected to cause traffic disruption.
The Ministry, led by Minister Yolanda Díaz, sent a" note to government delegations on Tuesday with the recommendation, which aims to promote the safety of workers, reduce unnecessary travel and contribute to the normal functioning of services and economic activities" during the visit.
Spain to deploy record number of firefighters for summer in EU plan
The European Union said Tuesday it would deploy a record number of firefighters and aircraft in high-risk areas ahead of the summer wildfire season.
Brussels said 777 firefighters from 14 countries would be in position in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal to help local emergency services.
The bloc would also put on standby 22 firefighting planes and five helicopters from the EU's fleet.
"Wildfire season starts earlier, lasts longer, and hits harder," said EU crisis management commissioner Hadja Lahbib. "Last summer, over one million hectares burnt across Europe."
Pope and Bad Bunny push average hotel prices in Madrid over €600 per night
Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the capital coincides with Bad Bunny, due to perform at the Metropolitano, and this has sent hotel prices soaring.
Spanish media reports show that those who booked at the end of May have already found that a double room costs an average of €637 per night, 31 percent more than a year ago.
If you book for the three nights the Pope will be in the capital: a double room costs an average of €3,806, a 141 percent increase.
