Spanish court orders Franco family to return Galician estate
On Thursday Spain's Supreme Court upheld the ruling of a provincial court in A Coruña ordering former dictator Francisco Franco's grandchildren to return the Pazo de Meirás estate in Galicia to the Spanish state.
The court also dismissed all appeals; both that of the dictator's family, which sought recognition of its ownership of the estate, and that of the state, which sought to avoid having to compensate the heirs for expenses incurred on the property.
The ruling was adopted unanimously that Pazo de Meirás was the property of the Spanish state, and that the Martínez-Bordiú siblings had to return it but they were entitled to compensation for the necessary and useful expenses incurred on the property.
Málaga museum hosts Spain-USA anniversary conference event
Málaga museum will host this Friday, March 13th, a special conference on “Spain and the United States: 250th anniversary of relations and historical ties”.
Promoted by the Regional Ministry of Culture and Sport, the event aims to "highlight the political, social and economic ties between Spain and the United States" and will feature several notable speakers with Transatlantic experience.
The event comes as Spain and the US clash politically over wars in the Middle East and defence spending.
Far-left Podemos tables bill to limit variable mortgages
Far-left party Podemos has submitted a bill to the Spanish Congress to cap variable mortgage rates in response to the rise in the Euribor, the main benchmark index for mortgages in Spain.
The bill seeks to temporarily limit the interest rate on variable-rate mortgages and make it easier for families to switch these loans to fixed-rate mortgages, given that the Euribor suffered its biggest daily increase in 18 years this past week.
They want the rate set at Euribor +0.1 percent for one year. Those who would be able to benefit from the measure would those with incomes below three times the IPREM.
New flight to launch between several Spanish airports and Venice
The Hungarian airline Wizz Air has announced it will launch several new routes between Spanish cities and Venice in Italy. Flights from Bilbao and Málaga will begin on September 14th, while those from Alicante and Seville will begin on September 15th.
Four weekly flights will operate to Bilbao every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday during the summer season, and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday during the winter season. Four weekly flights will also run to Málaga operating every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Routes to Alicante and Seville will have three weekly flights, operating Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
