Madrid government transferred €61 million from public nursing homes to pay off the debt
The regional Madrid government, headed up by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, used €61 million earmarked for nursing homes to pay off debt, according to the Court of Auditors annual report.
The money was used to “cover the expenses related to the settlement of the activity corresponding to the free choice of the 2021 fiscal year of the special agreement for the provision of healthcare, signed with the Jiménez Díaz Foundation,” the report states. The Jiménez Díaz Foundation is Quirón's flagship hospital in the Community of Madrid, which manages three other hospitals in the public network in Móstoles, Collado Villalba and Valdemoro.
Free choice allows any resident of Madrid to select the public healthcare centre where they wish to receive treatment, including the five managed by Quirón and Ribera Salud.
Five arrested for burglary of luxury Costa del Sol homes
A total of five people have been arrested and eleven others are under investigation in Marbella and Mijas for allegedly robbing luxury homes. According to the Civil Guard, the suspects targeted high-net-worth individuals, followed them to locate their residences, and then broke into their homes to steal valuables.
The investigation began after several reports of similar robberies, where all victims were high-income individuals. During the investigation, it was discovered that the criminal organisation also owned several properties in Marbella and Mijas and that they used latex masks and wigs during the robberies to avoid being recognised.
Spain's right wing close to an absolute majority thanks to the rise of Vox
According to the first poll of the year by 40dB for news sites Cadena SER and El País, the Partido Popular and far-right Vox would win 49.4 percent of the votes if general elections were held today.
This means that the right wing currently leads by 13 points. Never before in recorded history have the two right-wing parties been so close to the 50 percent threshold.
Sánchez maintains second place but has fallen for the third consecutive month, while head of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo takes first-place position.
Vox is now stealing more votes from the PSOE than the PP and is once again the fastest-growing party. Abascal's party has surged 5.5 points above its result in the last general election.
Spain makes largest-ever cocaine seizure at sea
Spanish police announced on Monday their largest-ever seizure of cocaine at sea after impounding a Europe-bound container ship in the Atlantic Ocean carrying almost 10 tonnes of the drug.
Officers last week raided the Cameroon-flagged vessel which had left Brazil, seizing 9,994 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in 294 packages in a shipment of salt, police said in a statement.
They arrested the 13 crew members and seized a firearm used to protect the stash in an operation involving US, Brazilian, UK, French and Portuguese authorities, the statement added.
Spain's close ties with Latin America and proximity to Morocco, a top cannabis producer, make it a key entry point for drugs into Europe.
