Finland overtakes Spain as country with highest unemployment rate in EU
Spain, a country well known for high unemployment rates, has been overtaken by Finland as the country with the highest rate in the EU.
In November, Finland became the EU country with the highest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, at 10.6 percent, surpassing Spain for the first time, according to data published by the EU statistics office, Eurostat.
This historic overtaking occurred after Finland's unemployment rate rose by two-tenths of a percentage point compared to October, while Spain's fell by one-tenth of a percentage point to 10.4 percent.
Spain recovers stolen Roman sculptures on display in New York museum
Valuable historical artefacts stolen from Spain 18 years ago have been recovered and returned.
Between 2007 and 2008, two Roman sculptures dating from the 1st or 2nd century were looted in the south of Spain, illegally removed from the country, auctioned in 2012 in the United States and then finally exhibited, at least since 2015, at the famous Metropolitan Museum in New York (MET).
The sculptures have now been returned to Spain following the investigation work of Spain's Historical Heritage Brigade and will be exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid.
Cable theft on Córdoba-Seville line causes delays to high-speed trains in Andalusia
A cable theft between the stations of Guadajoz in Seville and Córdoba on Thursday caused delays on long- and medium-distance high-speed train connections, affecting connections between Andalusia and the rest of Spain.
On social media, Spain's railway administrator Adif reported the incident after the theft was detected early this morning between the aforementioned stations.
Sources from this public company have indicated that the theft took place at around 00:40 on Thursday, causing a malfunction in the signalling system, which has been operating as the main signal control system for Spanish high-speed trains since 1992.
British fugitive accused of rape arrested in Alicante
Spanish police have arrested a 41-year-old British man in the Alicante town of San Fulgencio who was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by the UK authorities for a sexual assault offence, for which he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The international arrest warrant was brought to the attention of Spanish police through Interpol after suspicions arose that the fugitive may have the Alicante area to evade justice.
Investigators began their search and soon located him in the town of San Fulgencio, where he was located and arrested.
Spain says Venezuela freed five Spanish prisoners
Venezuela on Thursday freed five Spaniards in a large prisoner release seen as a concession to the United States after the ouster of president Nicolas Maduro, Spain's foreign ministry said.
"The government of Spain welcomes the liberation today in Caracas of five Spaniards, one of them a dual national, who are preparing to travel to Spain," the ministry said in a statement.
Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares told public radio RNE that they included prominent Spanish-Venezuelan activist Rocio San Miguel.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on X that the Spanish citizens had been held for more than a year in the South American country.
The prisoner release was "an act of justice and a necessary step to foster dialogue and reconciliation between Venezuelans", Sanchez added.
