Record number of foreign tourists in Spain for a month of January
Last January, Spain received a total of 5.1 million international tourists, a new monthly record that represents an increase of 6.1 percent compared to the same month in 2024.
British tourists were the biggest group of foreign holidaymakers with 863,286 (3.6 percent more than in January 2024). followed by French visitors who numbered 641,201 (+12.2 percent), and German tourists with 537,842 visitors(-2.4 percent).
Spain to ban sugary food and drinks in schools
Spain's Consumers Affairs Ministry has announced that it's preparing a decree to ban the sale of industrially made pastries, energy drinks and sugary drinks in school and high school vending machines and cafeterias.
The idea is to set the ban the sale of any product with more than 5 grammes of sugar. According to the ministry, almost 70 percent of food and drinks currently sold in school vending machines does not comply with the nutritional criteria established by the World Health Organisation, 75 percent in the case of Spanish high schools.
Train strike announced in Spain
Work councils representing employees for Spanish railway operators Renfe and Adif have called seven days of partial ofor full strikes between March 17th and April 3rd.
They are protesting against the transfer of power of Catalan commuter Rodalies trains to the Catalan government, an agreement which was reached in 2024.
Father fights daughter's euthanasia bid in Spanish court
A young paraplegic woman asked a Spanish court Tuesday to let her exercise her right to euthanasia against the wishes of her father, who says that she suffers from mental health problems.
Euthanasia was legalised in Spain in 2021, but this is the first time a case has reached a court for a judge to decide.
During the closed-door hearing at a Barcelona court, the 24-year-old woman, who has not been publicly identified, reiterated her request to die, judicial sources said.
She became paraplegic after throwing herself from the fifth floor of a building in a suicide attempt in 2022, and officially requested euthanasia last April.
The euthanasia board in the northeastern region of Catalonia supported her request in July, saying it was in accordance with the law, which stipulates that anyone of sound mind who is suffering from a "serious and incurable illness" or a "chronic and disabling" condition could request assistance to die.
The woman was to be euthanized on August 2 but the process was suspended at the last minute after her father filed a legal objection with the backing of the campaign group Abogados Cristianos ("Christian Lawyers").
