Richard Gere to be honoured at Spain's top film awards
US actor Richard Gere, who recently moved to Spain, will be honoured next month at the country's top film honours, the Goya awards, the Spanish Film Academy said Thursday.
The 75-year-old will receive an International Goya at the nationally televised awards ceremony in the southern city of Granada on February 8, it said in a statement.
The academy praised Gere, who reached global stardom in films such as "Pretty Woman" and "American Gigolo", for his "extraordinary contribution to the art of filmmaking, starring in some of the most iconic films in the history of cinema".
Gere and his Spanish wife, Alejandra Silva, 41, moved to Madrid last year with their two sons.
"We are happier than ever," the actor said in an interview published in the latest version of the Spanish edition of "Elle" magazine when asked about their new life in Spain.
'Return hubs' Spain opposes back on table as EU ministers talk migration
Should the EU set up migrant return centres outside the bloc -- and if so, where and for whom? European home affairs ministers began thrashing out the explosive question during talks Thursday in Warsaw.
The "informal meeting" -- the EU version of a brainstorming session -- comes as hard-right electoral gains in several countries led to a hardening of Brussels' posture on irregular arrivals.
Currently less than 20 percent of people ordered to leave the bloc are returned to their country of origin, according to EU data.
"That's why we are working on new rules, on tighter rules," said Magnus Brunner, the EU commissioner in charge of migration.
Spain has outright rejected the idea, citing concerns about the respect for human rights.
Madrid prefers "promoting a preventive migration policy based on bilateral cooperation with the countries of origin and transit" in the fight against people traffickers, according to sources within Spain's interior ministry.
Murcia munitions factory explosion injures six
An explosion at a Spanish munitions factory belonging to a subsidiary of German industrial conglomerate Rheinmetall injured six people on Thursday, one seriously, emergency services said.
Emergency services in the southeastern Murcia region rushed to the industrial site of Javali Viejo where they treated six men aged between 30 and 52 for injuries of varying severity including head trauma, burns and smoke inhalation.
Five were taken to hospitals in the regional capital Murcia and the sixth victim was treated on site, emergency services added in a statement.
They located the incident at a site operated by Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, which specialises in artillery ammunition, mortar and medium-calibre rounds and rocket propulsion systems.
Decomposing bodies in Canaries-bound migrant boat located in the Caribbean
The coast guard of the Caribbean islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis has discovered 13 decomposing bodies in a boat adrift off the coast, days after another five bodies were found in a skiff near Trinidad and Tobago.
Officials believe that both boats had drifted from the African coast with migrants on board who planned to reach Spain's Canary Islands.
This has happened on numerous occasions now, with boats full of decomposing bodies arriving at the shores of different Latin American and Caribbean nation, as a result of the clandestine patera vessels going adrift and missing the Spanish archipelago, with those on board tragically dying during the Atlantic crossing.
NGO Caminando Fronteras estimates that more than 10,000 migrants lost their lives trying to reach the Canary Islands by sea in 2024.
