Traditional Spanish baked goods and puddings just don't seem to be as good or as well-known as their European counterparts from France, Italy, the UK and Portugal, do you agree? Read on to discover the reasons why this might be.

The angel de cabello pastries knock me out. And the crema catalana can be a rush.

Good observations. My simplistic theory until now was always that since Spain has such a good variety of excellent fruit they never had a need or reason to develop elaborate pastries, etc.. My Spanish in-laws had fruit for desert after every meal, with cakes, etc. only on special occasions - Christmas, Easter, birthdays, etc. Upon observing their apparent health I adopted the same custom. They both made it to 99, so it seemed to work for them!

I agree with your article. I have lived in Spain almost four years and find Spanish deserts very plain and boring.

Clearly it’s not particularly traditional - other than its shape - but Mercadona’s large, round chocolate cake with chocolate chips and the hole in the centre is one of the best cakes I’ve eaten anywhere in the world!
