Most people, especially the ones living abroad, are particularly passionate about their 'patria'.
Patria means homeland or mother country. Let's look at some examples:

Ella regresa a su patria cada verano.
She returns to her homeland every summer.

La bandera es el símbolo patrio más utilizado.
The flag is the most used national symbol.

Morir por la patria.
Die for your country.

Echo de menos mi patria chica.
I miss my home town.
And finally, here's a thoroughly modern use of patria:

Patria potestad (se divorcian y compartirán la patria potestad)
Parental rights (they're getting divorced and sharing custody of their sons)
