Spanish Word of the Day: ‘Patria’

Most people, especially the ones living abroad, are particularly passionate about their 'patria'.

Patria means homeland or mother country. Let's look at some examples:

  • Ella regresa a su patria cada verano.

She returns to her homeland every summer.

  • La bandera es el símbolo patrio más utilizado.

The flag is the most used national symbol.

  • Morir por la patria.

      Die for your country.

  • Echo de menos mi patria chica.

       I miss my home town.

And finally, here's a thoroughly modern use of patria:

  • Patria potestad (se divorcian y compartirán la patria potestad)

Parental rights (they're getting divorced and sharing custody of their sons)
