Barcelona Director of Public Spaces Xavier Segura announced on Friday plans to offer free Wifi across the city's beaches for the summer.

Segura said there had already been a test pilot at a beach in nearby Viladecans and another pilot has begun at Nova Icària beach in Barcelona, according to newspaper El Periódico.

The city plans to bring Wifi to the rest of the beaches and later on into the city itself.

The Wifi project is part of a great initiative to create "smart beaches", which also includes placing sensors on garbage bins to measure waste to make trash collection more efficient.

"All of these elements make the beaches much more clean," Segura told reporters.

The city is also offering a free app that gives information on parks and are installing hundreds of new bicycle parking places along the beaches.
