A new survey shows that the popular instant messaging service WhatsApp is being increasingly used by Spaniards to break up with their short-term partners.

Internet dating portal SingletonSearch.com found that 54 percent of 1,500 Spanish people surveyed had broken up with someone they'd been dating for less than three months by using  WhatsApp.

The main reason given for this is to avoid the awkwardness of having to confront the soon-to-be ex face to face.

Twelve percent had instead opted for a phone conversation to end the relationship and a cowardly three percent owned up to having simply disappeared off the radar to call it quits.

Only 23 percent of those surveyed preferred to break up with their partners in person by giving them valid reasons for ending the relationship.

WhatsApp is a real-time messaging application for smartphones. Some ten billion messages were sent using the application in August 2012.
