For the rebel at heart: The Carnival of Cadiz (held from February 12th to 22nd in 2015) is one of the best known carnivals in Spain. The carnival's origins date back to the 16th century when Cadiz was one of the most important ports in the Spanish empire. The city traded heavily with Venice and copied many of the Italian city's traditions, which combine today to form the carnival. The Cadiz Carnival was banned under the dictator Francisco Franco but rebellious locals carried on with the tradition behind closed doors. Political satire remains very much the order of the day in this carnival, especially on Carnival Saturday when people dress up in costumes referencing Spanish news and current affairs. For the foodie: The coveted title of Spanish Gastronomic Capital 2015 goes to Cáceres in Extremadura, whose beautiful walled city is a Unesco world heritage site. Enjoy the locally produced salted hams and red wine, or sample some goats cheese, renowned throughout Spain. Cáceres is also famous for its stews, its Torta del Casar cheese made from sheep’s milk and migas, or fried breadcrumbs. As an added ingredient, the city also hosts the (free!) Womad world music festival at the beginning of May, giving you a unique chance to combine music and history with mouthwatering morsels in 2015. Photo: Shutterstock
For the party animal: Head to Madrid from July 1st-5th to take part in one of the biggest gay pride (orgullo) celebrations in the world. Spain frequently comes near the top the of the list of countries which are the most accepting of gay people and every July Madrid opens its arms to anyone looking for a good time. Rather than being an exclusively gay event, Madrid Pride has evolved into a celebration of the city. Centred around the neighbourhood of Chueca, festivities include the annual Carerra de Tacones, or stiletto race, open air concerts and the huge parade down the city’s Gran Vía.Photo: AFP
For the adventurous athlete: If you love nothing more than running and drinking wine why not combine your two passions in the Lanzarote wine run held on June 14th. The race starts at 10am and wine runners have five hours to complete the course which takes them through the beautiful vineyards of the La Geria region, which looks as if it has been transplanted there from another planet. Black volcanic ash covers the ground and vines are planted one by one in deep funnel-shaped hollows. Don't worry, you're not seeing things: these are like no vineyards you've ever seen before. For the romantic: One of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Spain is the annual spring flowering of the cherry trees in Extremadura’s Jerte Valley when over a million fruit trees come into bloom. The timing of this ten–15 day spectacle depends on the weather but usually takes place in the period from the last ten days of March to the first ten days of April. The cherry trees line the N-110 highway, especially between Navaconcejo and Tornavacas while the Becedas gorge is a great place to take photographs.Photo: Shutterstock
For the art lover: Most people bypass Malaga on their way to Spain's Costa del Sol but they are missing out. This lovely city is hoping to forge a more sophisticated image in 2015 with the opening of Centre Pompidou, an offshoot of the famous Parisian museum which will house works borrowed from its French counterpart. The museum, which will include works by Picasso, Miro and Frida Khalo, will be housed in a huge cube structure on Malaga’s swanky marina. 2015 also sees the opening of the first foreign branch of St Petersburg’s State Russian Museum in Malaga, which will be housed in a 1920s tobacco factory and will include works by Kandinsky and Chagall. With all this going on, Pablo Picasso's home town is set to be an art lover’s paradise in 2015.Photo: AFP
For the fitness fanatic: La Vuelta or the Tour of Spain takes place in September and gives cycling fans a chance to follow the race around the country, taking in some of Spain’s most beautiful landscapes along the way. The race takes you from some of Spain’s most famous cities such as Valencia and Malaga, to some off-the-beaten-track locations like Medina del Campo, a beautiful rural town close to Valladolid and Roa de Duero in the heart of the Burgos wine country. For the wine lover: Spain is a paradise for oenophiles, of course, but if you are looking for something a little special, International Sherry Week could be just the ticket. First held in its current form in 2014, this event organized by Australian–Spanish marketer Chelsea Anthon Penas is a great way to learn about a uniquely Spanish wine tradition and a great opportunity to visit Cadiz province, one of Spain’s most beautiful regions. Keep an eye out for details of the 2015 event. Photo: Shutterstock
For the bookworm: 2015 sees the 400th anniversary of the publication of the second (and, for many people, superior) part of the Spanish classic Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. To mark the occasion, why not follow in the footsteps of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza and embark on the Council of Europe's official Don Quixote route — an amazing 2000km (1,240 mile) trail that covers all the important sites mentioned in the novel. And whatever you do, don’t forget to take in the famous windmills of Castille La Mancha. Photo: Shutterstock
For the music lover: Travel snobs may scoff at Benidorm but the coastal destination is home to much more than sun, sea and sunloungers. Lowfestival from July 24th to the 26th welcomes a mixture of Spanish and international bands. Headliners in 2015 are British rockers Kasabian. Three-day tickets are currently available for €50 ($60) or you can go all out and get a VIP ticket for as little as €90. Photo: Low Festival
For the 'I liked it before it was hip' guy: San Sebastian in the Basque country will be European capital of culture in 2016, so why not beat the crowds and check out the gastronomic capital of Europe while you can still wander the old narrow streets in relative peace. Sample some of the world’s best tapas or pintxos from the traditional to the experimental, check out the whisky museum, or simply soak up the atmosphere at La Concha, one of the most beautiful city beaches in the world. And if that's not enough, why not combine your trip with a visit to the city’s summer jazz festival which plays host to some of the world's finest jazz musicians. Photo: Shutterstock
