"I like the atmosphere of Bilbao," Stuart Butler, one of the authors of the Lonely Planet’s Spain guide told The Local. "It might not be as glam as neighbouring San Sebastián, but I think it has more character. For the best overview of the city take the Funicular de Artxanda, a clanky old funicular railway, up to the top of the Artxanda hill. The whole city is spread out below you and beyond are the wild Basque mountains."
