Unfortunate as it is, public life in Spain has been dogged by shady deals of all kinds in recent years. From allegations of illegal funding of political parties to more run-of-the mill bribes and backhanders to local bigwigs, news about illegal activity has become depressingly commonplace. THE MARBELLA MODEL: The larger-than-life character of Jesús Gil set the tone for the corrupt Costa del Sol resort, the judicial consequences of which are still unravelling 10 years after the former mayor and Atlético Madrid owner’s death. Juan Antonio Roca, the brains behind Marbella’s sprawling web of real estate-linked corruption was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined €240 million in October 2013 after a nine-year legal process in which 100 people were charged.
