However, her neighbours in the Madrid apartment block where she has lived for decades but is threatened with eviction, were determined not to let the day pass unnoticed.
In a video that has warmed hearts across Spain after being shared on social media, a surprised Charo, dressed in dressing gown and slippes is seen opening her front door to discover a neighbour has left her a cake with a candle.
Told that she needs to come out and come to the window, she is met by all her neighbours who are hanging out of their windows overlooking the buildings central courtyard.
Her face crinkles into a toothless smile and she wipes away tears as the peeks from the window to hear her neighbours burst into the song “Cumpleaños Feliz”.
