British father in Mallorca becomes Spain's second confirmed coronavirus case
A British father who tested positive for coronavirus in Mallorca was confirmed as the second case of the virus in Spain.
The man had been put under observation at Son Espases Hospital in Palma on Friday after he reported coming into contact with a Brit holidaying in France who was subsequently diagnosed.
His wife and two children were also under observation but so far had no symptoms and tests have come back negative for the virus.
Spain’s health ministry said that authorities were studying potential cases of those who may have come into contact with the man while on the Balearic Island.
It is only the second confirmed case in Spain. On Friday 31st January a German tourist on the Canary Island of La Gomera became the first person to test positive for the virus in Spain.
He has been under observation in isolation in a hospital on the island and has no flu-like symptoms despite testing positive as a carrier. It is understood he contracted the virus after coming into contact in Germany with a person who was later diagnosed.
Five of his travelling companions are also in quarantine although they have tested negative for the coronavirus.
The German man could be discharged as soon as Friday after observing the two-week quarantine required by the WHO.
The coronavirus which erupted in Wuhan, central China, in December has already infected more than 34,500 people and killed more than 700, according to the latest official figures from China.
