The European Union on Wednesday received the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Concord - seen as the Hispanic world's Nobel Peace Prize - for its achievements over the six decades since its formation.

"The EU represents a unique model of supranational political integration based on the peaceful, progressive and free association of its members," a statement from the prize-givers said.

The award is given every year by the Oviedo-based Princess of Asturias Foundation in recognition of institutions or individuals whose work contributes to the spread of peace, human rights and freedom.

Previous winners include rescue workers at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant and the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem.

EU president Donald Tusk said on Twitter that the prize was "recognition of EU's 60 years of peace, democracy and prosperity".
