Juan Manuel Calle Sanchez attempted to scale the wooden barrier to escape the horns of the bull but slipped and fell back towards the animal, according to a report in Hoy.es

Spectators watched in horror on Sunday as they saw the man crushed beneath the bull whose horn pierced his lung. He was rushed to hospital but died on the operating table.

The town hall of Guijo de Gallisteo, which oversees the municipality of Valrio, confirmed the death of the local bachelor and declared three days of mourning.

"From the municipality of Guijo de Galisteo, we offer condolences to the family and friends of M.C.S. who died during the celebration of the last bullfighting festival of the town," said the mayor Juan Carlos Blazquez, in a post on Facebook.

It was at least the fifth death by goring in Spain since the start of summer. Last month a mother of two became an accidental victim after she stepped out of a front door into the path of a bullrun in the town of Moratalla.

And three other men have died during festivals celebrated across Spain.

On July 9th matador Victor Barrio was gored to death, the first bullfighter to be killed in the ring for 30 years.
