Bite-sized dish given ultimate honour with World Tapas Day

Turespaña, Spain’s tourism agency, has unveiled plans to promote one of Spain’s most idiosyncratic customs by giving tapas its own day for celebration.

Whether it be a humble bar snack served free with a glass of wine or a heavenly morsel created by a Michelin starred chef, Spain has decided that it's high time tapas got the worldwide recognition it deserves.

So henceforth, the third Thursday of every June will be known as World Tapas Day, when across Spain and beyond its borders activities and promotions will be dedicated excusively to promoting to the finger food.

"Gastronomy is becoming increasingly important in tourism attracting more than 9.5 million tourists to Spain in 2015," said Turespaña, announcing the initiative at Madrid’s Fitur, the international tourism trade fair.

"Tapas is a symbol of Spain and is considered deserving of being the star of its own World Day because it is representative of our cuisine in miniature, is the focus of our most innovative chefs and because tapas is a word that is recognized in all major languages."

World Tapas Day will see tourist boards across Spain organize special tours and workshops in collaboration with chefs and restaurants.

The organizers said they already have more than 20 countries which will observe the day.
