Spanish police said on Monday they had arrested a British man on the resort island of Mallorca who went missing after being granted parole while serving a murder sentence in Britain.

The police said the man was detained on Saturday in the town of Calvia for allegedly assaulting a British woman in the area in August. They did not reveal his identity.

British police officers sent to the island to help their Spanish counterparts patrol the resort probed the man's background and found that London has issued a European arrest warrant for him after he fled his homeland while on parole.

Calvia is close to Magaluf, a resort that attracts hundreds of thousands of British tourists each year.
