Wilson is a former amateur footballer who settled in Gibraltar after being based there in the British navy, and is originally from North Ayrshire.
After working with local footballers he became assistant to head coach Allen Bula, who was sacked last week after overseeing the British colony's first four competitive matches as a full member of UEFA.
"We are delighted to announce that David Wilson will take over as 'Interim Head Coach' for the upcoming European Qualifier against Scotland at Hampden Park on the 29th March 2015," the Gibraltar FA said on its website on Friday.
"Mr Wilson has been Gibraltar's Assistant Manager in recent years and has played an important role in the preparation of the National Team in all of its fixtures since the first official International recognised fixture versus Slovakia in November 2013."
Gibraltar's first four Euro qualifiers were 7-0 defeats to Poland and Ireland, a 3-0 defeat to Georgia and a "mere" 4-0 loss to the World champions Germany.
Poland top Group D on ten points ahead of Germany, Scotland and Ireland on seven, Georgia have three points and Gibraltar are rock bottom with none.
The Gibraltar FA said that by the time they play Germany again in Faro, Portugal at the Algarve Stadium June 15th they hope to have appointed a permanent head coach.
