Dog owners in a town in Spain's Basque Country are on alert after a stranger tried to kill a local pooch with a sausage stacked full of metal nails. Local police believe someone is waging war against the local dog population.

Vets in the town of Durango managed to save the life of one-and-half-year-old setter Parche, surgically removing the nine nails they found in her stomach before they caused any further damage.

“They’ve torn three membranes in her stomach,” Parche’s owner Ainhoa told Spanish daily ABC.

“Whoever did it really knew how to cause an animal harm, they cooked the sausages to draw the dogs in.”

Parche isn’t the first pooch to be secretly attacked; several other dogs in Durango have been killed with poison-laced balls and food left in parks and public areas.

Local dog owners told Basque TV EITB they think whoever is behind the attacks is against their plans to have an area in the town where their dogs can run around freely without a leash.

Their Facebook group Durandog posted a photo on Thursday of an X-ray of another dog’s stomach with two nails lodged in it.
