Images which appear to depict police brutality during a protest over the eviction of a squat in Barcelona on Monday have taken Spain's social media by storm.

Officers made several arrests as hooded youths smashed windows and hurled stones at police and journalists in the streets of the north-eastern city, news agency AFP reported on Tuesday.

But images posted on photo-sharing website Flickr portray an equally violent stance on the part of Catalan Mossos D’Esquadra police.

The photo seen above, which shows how a man on his bike is struck across the ear by two anti-riot officers, is Wednesday’s top viewed post on Spain’s main social networking site Meneame, the local equivalent of Reddit.
