Gravediggers slammed for mocking the dead
A leaked video showing how Spanish cemetery workers made fun of the bodily remains they were exhuming has turned into a social media success despite its inappropriate content.
The footage, filmed with a mobile phone and widely shared on Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook, allegedly shows how the gravediggers made sarcastic comments as they pulled skeletons out of their coffins in a cemetery in Murcia, southern Spain.
“What a stinker” and “let’s see if he runs off now” are reportedly two of the demeaning comments made by the gravediggers while being unknowingly filmed, local daily La Opinión de Murcia reported.
Residents in the town of Cieza, where the video was filmed, are said to be furious about the way their dead were treated.
The exhumation caught on camera was part of a series of transfers planned at the cemetery for bodies buried more than 70 years ago.
The company responsible for the upkeep of the Santísimo Cristo del Consuelo cemetery has announced it will press charges against the people who filmed and leaked the footage, claiming it was them and not the gravediggers who made the disrespectful comments.
