Spain's 'Iron Lady' in hit-and-run scandal
The 'Iron Lady' of Spanish politics has caused a stir after she was fined by traffic cops on Madrid's emblematic Gran Vía and sped off moments after, knocking over a police motorbike.
Esperanza Aguirre, former president of Madrid and an influential figure in Spain's ruling Popular Party(PP), has got herself into a spot of trouble.
At 4pm on Thursday she allegedly illegally parked her car on a bus lane on the capital’s busy Gran Via, to quickly withdraw money from a cash machine.
Traffic police apprehended her moments after, but the tough-talking Aguirre refused to pull her Toyota Verso to one side after they had issued the fine.
Once the officers had handed over her ID and driving license, Aguirre put her foot on the gas and drove off, knocking over one of the traffic policeman's motorbike in the process.
According to Spanish police sources, the current Popular Party president for Madrid continued her escape towards the central neighbourhood of Malasaña where she lives.
Local police officers tailed her but she refused to speak to them when parking her vehicle in the garage.
After managing to talk to her at the entrance to her building, officers went to the closest police station to file a report against her for failing to cooperate with police authorities.
"They wanted a picture of me with six police officers. Lies, arrogance and chauvinism!" Aguirre told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser after the incident.

"I apologized to them (the officers), and once the paperwork was done I asked them if I could leave, they told me 'no', that I'd have to wait a while.
That's when Aguirre told them "they could meet (her) at her home" and decided to speed off abruptly.
"My car only lightly brushed against one of the motorbikes that were there to block the exit”.
"It fell over, it was terribly parked," Aguirre told Onda Cero radio station.
Aguirre's run-in with the police took Twitter by storm within a matter of hours, with humorous memes mocking her 'reckless driving' becoming a trending topic.
