It didn't take long for the rumour to make the rounds in the Majorca town of Sóller: screen legend Chuck Norris was in town.

When locals heard the 73-year-old star of classic films including The Way of the Dragon and The Delta Force was staying at hotel La Vila, they came out in droves.

Finally the man at the centre of the rumours emerged from the establishment.

Some of Sóller's more daring locals even had their photographs taken with the man in the black hat, Spain's Diaro de Mallorca newspaper reported on Thursday.

But those photos may now be relegated to the scrapheap after it emerged the striking figure was merely a Chuck Norris body double.

The lookalike was spending the weekend on the island shooting a promotional film for local hotel owner Toni Oliver.

A devout Christian and former US Air Force man, Chuck Norris is the subject of a bizarre internet joke phenomenon which kicked off in 2005.

Known as Chuck Norris facts, these jokes play on the actor's supposed incredible strength, virility and sophistication.

"It takes Chuck Norris 20 minutes to watch 60 Minutes," one of these facts reads.

"Newton's Third Law is wrong: Although it states that for each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, there is no force equal in reaction to a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick," another reads.
