Residents in the town of Salobreña near Granada were outraged to find out the owner of a local pub was promoting a party with posters in which he promised a sexual relationship with a “special waitress” to one lucky lottery winner.
The matter was taken to the town hall by a group of neighbours who had already grown tired of the pub’s excessive noise levels.
Spanish Civil Guards in the town approached the man before the event was due to take place last Saturday, warning him of the criminal risks he was running.
The bar owner decided not to go ahead with the party, a decision he claims he reached prior to receiving the townspeople’s complaints.
María José García, equality councillor in Salobreña, labelled the advertising campaign as “sexist and disrespectful towards women”.
“It incites prostitution and views women as mere objects,” García told Spanish news agency EFE when referring to the campaign.
