A morning mass in Spain was the subject of an usual visitation on Monday when a pistol-wielding cyclist took over proceedings from the local parish priest.

The interloper wheeled his way into the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in the district of Sangonera la Verde in Spain's south-eastern Murcia province.

His mid-mass mass caused minor panic among a number of parishioners, but not everyone was overcome by the event.

One group of daring women stepped in to relive the visitor of his weapon.

The man then jumped onto the church's altar and demanded his gun be returned to him.

Again, people power was on display as another worshipper overpowered the distressed individual.

Back up arrived soon after in the form of eight Civil Guard and police vehicles. The agents then entered the church in bullet proof jackets to remove the man.

He was treated by doctors, receiving psychiatric medication, the local town hall reported on its website.
