The 47-year-old woman did not plan on running with the bulls, but was caught by surprise as she came out of a doorway.

Sofía López González, a mother of two, was caught on the horn of heifer suffering an injury to her abdomen.

According to eye witnesses she tried to escape the path of the animal but her backpack became caught up in the protective barrier, reported the local paper Opinion de Murcia.

She died late Sunday night in hospital.

It was the final bull run in the week-long Fiestas del Cristo del Rayo celebrated in Moratalla, a town in Murcia in southern Spain.

The town hall declared three days of mourning.

It is the third death by goring this summer during fiestas that take place across Spain. A 28-year-old man was killed in Pedreguer earlier this month and a 65-year-old lost his life during a bull run in Zamora.

On July 9th matador Victor Barrio was gored to death, the first bullfighter to be killed in the ring for 30 years.
