Prosecutors are calling for jail sentences of two years and four months for two mothers who left their children locked in a parked car while they went out drinking in the Basque capital of Vitoria.

The two women got so drunk on the night of September 6th 2014 that they couldn’t remember where they had parked the car containing the three children, all girls under the age of seven.

Meanwhile the eldest of the children had telephoned the emergency number 112 from a mobile phone left inside the car and told an operator: "We’re locked in, we’re hungry and we don’t have anything to eat. It’s night time."

When the two women, aged 32 and 38, eventually located the car the police were already there and one of the accused then attempted to assault an officer.

It later emerged, according to the prosecutor, that one of the women had also left another child at home alone earlier in the day.
