An American woman, 35, has been detained in Spain for stabbing her baby daughter.

The woman, the wife of a solider on the Morón de la Frontera US military base in southern Spain, was reported to police by locals for running naked through the town of Utrera shouting threats.

"She was running through the town naked shouting 'kill, kill, kill' in English," a spokeswoman for the Guardia Civil told The Local.

Two patrols from the local Guardia Civil arrived on the scene they "assumed the woman had been the victim of a crime," the spokeswoman said.

They accompanied her back to her house, to get her some clothes, when they discovered her ten-month-old baby.

"The baby was stabbed several times and the knife was lying by her side," the Guardia Civil confirmed to The Local, adding that the woman "began crying as they entered the house".

The woman, who has not been named, was taken to the psychiatric ward of the Virgen del Rocío hospital in Seville, while her daughter was taken to the same hospital where she is currently in a "serious but stable condition".
